Homeless in San Francisco exhibition poster with a photographic portrait by Karl F. Stewart, dated 16–18 October 2026.

Karl F. Stewart’s photographic exhibition Homeless in San Francisco brings portraits made in San Francisco’s financial district in 2012 to La Chapelle-sous-Brancion, France. The presentation centres on people experiencing poverty or homelessness and on the photographer’s effort to represent each sitter as an individual with dignity.

Stewart’s starting point is the familiar public image of homelessness: an anonymous person lying on a pavement, asking for money or searching through discarded belongings. In his account of the project, these images can describe visible circumstances while leaving little room for the person’s identity. His portraits seek to make that identity more present, encouraging viewers to look beyond a social category and consider the person facing the camera.

The exhibition presents 48 portraits. Rather than offering statistics or a general explanation of homelessness, the project is framed by the artist as a photographic tribute to shared humanity. The financial district provides a specific setting for the work, placing the portraits within a part of the city strongly associated with economic activity. Stewart describes the people he photographed as individuals who might equally be relatives, neighbours or former colleagues.

The exhibition takes place at the Salle des Fêtes, en Durot, on the D159 in La Chapelle-sous-Brancion, postcode 71700. The opening is on Friday 16 October 2026 at 18:30. Visitors can then see the exhibition on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00 each day.

Admission is free. The presentation offers an opportunity to encounter the series in person over a single weekend, with the photographs and their subjects remaining the focus of the visit. Further information about the photographer is available on Karl F. Stewart’s website.
